Discover the Art of Assemblage

No woodworking experience required.Learn. Participants will visit Larry Simons's mountaintop assemblage studio in Brattleboro, where he will showcase his thirty+ years collection of materials he uses for his artwork as well as discuss his methods along with tips and tricks for gathering materials. Next, participants will have the option to join Larry at Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles Show (date and time to be determined at the first session) or go on a hunting adventure of their own, with location guidance from Larry. Lastly, participants will meet at HatchSpace for a full day of making, using their gathered materials under the guidance of Larry, to create their finished assemblage. Make. Contact education@hatchspace.org for details.Instructor: Artist Larry Simons began making sculptures on Cape Cod in 1965 with leather scraps from the sandal shop where he worked.  After a move west, he fell in love with the raw beauty of the mountains and the desert, where he found rusted metal with a reddish tone and deeply grained shards of wood which had hardened with age in the dry air.Bits and pieces of his decades of collecting are spread throughout his Brattleboro studio so he can see as many as possible at a glance, constantly moving them around making different combinations until he is satisfied with an assemblage.
