Beginning Wood Sculpture Class with Paul Bowen

No woodworking experience required.Wales-born artist Paul Bowen has spent decades collecting materials on Cape Cod and around his Vermont home to convert into unique and intriguing creations. Take your woodworking in a new direction alongside this acclaimed wood sculpture artist, in this new offering at HatchSpace.Learn. You'll learn to cut and join wood using hand tools and simple methods, both conventional and experimental to achieve surprising and satisfying results. Students will be encouraged to use drawings and small-scale 3D "sketches" in wood to inform their final pieces.Paul will also introduce the work of other sculptors working around the world to create expressive, usually structural forms, in wood.    Make. You'll put discarded offcuts, scraps and other materials to good use by building one or more innovative sculptures informed by contemporary practice and your own imagination. Paul will be bringing wood materials and other found objects for participants to use in their small scale sculptures. He has also worked with ships' flags, tar, canvas, rope and other marine detritus. His drawings and prints derive their imagery from his environment and he has created his own inks from squid, Xerox toner and walnuts.
