Introduction to Boat Building - Mischief Pram

Build. This 4-day workshop is a collaborative build, in which participants will come together to learn the skill of boat building and build one Mischief Pram, a boat designed by Bill Thomas. Mischief is a versatile little boat for rowers of all ages - a perfect first-time boatbuilding project.  At 7'10" in length and 4'4" in width, she’s a stable and predictable craft. The construction is a builder-friendly hybrid of glue-and-screw construction and more traditional methods. The building process has been carefully choreographed so that a small group of builders can assemble the boat over two weekends."Mischief is a proven design; I’ve built her with students and used her in on water classes at the Wooden Boat School. She’s stable enough for kids to play around in; rows well, though pulling into head seas can be wet work. She tows like a feather and I’ve rowed her ashore with 4 adults and a load of camping gear aboard." - Bill ThomasLearn. Students will construct the Mischief Pram together as a group. Participants will have the option to purchase the finished pram for the cost of materials. No previous boatbuilding or woodworking experience required. Two weekends: Saturdays and Sundays, February 3, 4, 10 and 11  |  9am-4pm |  Class will break for a 1/2 hour lunch each day. Cost: $658.75 members; $775 non-members  Participants will have the option to purchase the finished pram for the cost of materials; otherwise, it will be donated to HatchSpace. What to Bring: Bring a bag lunch, or you may purchase lunch in downtown Brattleboro. For more information, please contact education@hatchspace.org.Instructor: Bill ThomasFor over 40 years I have been a woodworker, designing and building custom projects for a wide range of clients. The diversity of work, from cabinetry and furniture to sailboats, powerboats, kayaks and canoes, remains a constant source of enjoyment for me. At first blush, this breadth of work might seem unconnected but I’ve found that each new interest, each new skill set only serves to enrich and broaden the base of experience from which I draw. Through my woodworking and through outdoor leadership, by actively boating and designing, by building and teaching, both in the shop and on the water I continue to hone my skills while ensuring that they remain well founded in real life experience.
